Dispute Letters

Use this dispute letter template to dispute errors or inaccurate information that a creditor supplied to credit bureaus.

Your letter should identify each item you dispute, state the facts, explain why you dispute the information, and ask that the business that supplied the information take action to have it removed or corrected.

You may want to enclose a copy of your report with the items in question circled or highlighted.

Send your letter by certified mail with a return receipt requested, so you can document that the creditors and or credit bureaus got it.

Keep your originals. Include copies of the documents that support your request and save copies for your files.

In the credit repair process, a response will come one of five  ways.

  • Remove. Yes that is what we want, inaccurate or unverifiable.

  • Verified.  The creditor may have responded to the bureau’s request for verification, “Verification” from the credit bureau is not the same as verification from a creditor; only creditor verification proof is valid legally.

  • No response.  By law the bureaus are required to send you the results of their investigation in 30 days. Send them another letter repeating the dispute, reminding them of their legal obligations.

  • Frivolous. They may think you won’t stand up to the initial rejection. Reply by becoming more insistent. The law is on your side, don’t let them get away with this, they want you to stop.

  • Suspicious response. credit restoration companies are overwhelming them with disputes. You must insist that they open an investigation.
